This very large volume outlines the landing and the campaign by the Greek forces in Asia Minor; the military actions are detailed and often illustrated with photographs and dozens of sketchmaps specifically drawn for this edition.
The campaign by the Hellenic Army initially succeeded in forming a perimeter around the areas with significant Greek and other Christian populations, which had been the victims of late Ottoman genocidal policies. The success turned to disaster for a variety of reasons, including the electoral loss by the Venizelos government that had initiated this campaign; the withdrawal of British support; the inability of the Royalist government that succeeded Venizelos to define its priorities and objectives and to develop a coherent strategy; the rise of Kemal Ataturk, whose focus and ruthlessness (and support from the likes of Leninist Soviet Union) allowed him not only to prevail, but also to complete the physical elimination of the Christian people in Turkey.
