The Towns of Ancient RusM. TikhomirovPages/Illustr. 503 p. Clothbound Status: Not Yet Published ISBN: 0-89241-536-3
Originally published in1959, this is a detailed, comprehensive study of the rise and development or urban settlements in ancient Russia. The author shows that it was the Eastern Slavs who were the founders of towns in Kievan Rus and, "since towns are the wellspring of culture, it is the Slavs who are mainly to be credited with the development of Russian culture." Tikhomirov cites archaeological evidence as well as Slavic, Byzantine and Scandinavian sources to support his thesis of the Slavic (as opposed to Norman, Khazar, or Goth) origins of Russian towns. He includes a massive amount of information in economics and society, detailed descriptions of towns such as Kiev, Smolensk, Novgorod and Rostov-Suzdal, inter alia.
